What is Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease, known more commonly as gum disease, is a progressive condition that affects many American adults aged 30 and older. Gum disease occurs in two stages: the first stage, gingivitis, and the advanced stage, periodontitis. The common symptoms of gingivitis are often minor and present with little-to-no pain, allowing it to go undiagnosed for months before patients realize something is wrong. Symptoms of gum disease include infections in the gums that can cause redness, swelling, or bleeding when brushing or flossing.

If diagnosed early, gingivitis is easily treated and reversed with minimal lasting damage. Gum disease treatment includes improved at-home oral hygiene, professional cleanings, and medicated toothpastes or mouth rinses.

Once gingivitis advances into periodontitis, the condition requires specialized treatment to reverse the effects and restore optimal oral health. Symptoms of periodontitis include receding gum tissue, persistent bad breath, exposed tooth roots, infections in the space between the teeth and gums (called periodontal pockets). At this stage, the infection can spread to the jawbone and tooth-supporting ligaments, leading to permanent tooth loss.

What Causes Gum Disease?

In most cases, gum disease is caused by the buildup of bacterial plaque and tartar on the surfaces of your teeth. The buildup of plaque and tartar is usually a result of poor at-home oral hygiene. Other health factors can contribute to the patient’s risk of developing gum disease. These factors can include family history, smoking and tobacco use, certain medications, diabetes, or hormonal changes due to puberty, pregnancy or menopause.

How is Gum Disease Treated?

Dr. Todd can help restore your oral health and save your smile with scaling and root planing. Also called a deep cleaning, we will first perform a dental scaling to remove the built-up plaque and tartar from your teeth. Then we will perform a root planing to smooth the roots of your teeth. This will help keep bacteria from adhering to your tooth roots in the future and prevent infections.

They were absolutely Amazing!!! I was taken care of right away. This was my first visit and they did my x-rays and cleaning. My teeth have never looked and felt better. I did have a cavity fall out a while back and the Dr. Todd took a look and said it just needed another filling. The one I had in there was from when I was a kid. So excited to find a dentist I feel comfortable with taking care of all my dental needs.
